WHY YOU’RE MISSING FISH WHEN ON A FISHING TRIP

This is why you’re missing the fish. These TWO factors are often overlooked by anglers on every fishing trip.

FISHING TIPS TO REMEMBER

1. DEPTH

Your success is dependent on depth and you should remember this when casting. Your presentation may not be perfect, even if you are in the best spot for fish. Simply put, if you present the fish at the wrong depth, you won’t catch any fish. This is especially true when you fish with artificial lures. Inappropriate jigheads as well as the wrong weights can adversely impact your presentations, which force them into the incorrect depths.

It is important to spot trends and find out the depth at which fish are biting. Slip floats are also great for live bait. They allow you to keep your depth under control and ensure that your bait is presented correctly.

I fish at a depth and adjust the water column based on the attitude and behavior of the fish. If you’re surrounded by fish bait and birds, but still have no luck hooking into a fish while on the water, you can explore the entire water column at different depths. Some days those fish may be in another part of the water column.

Covering the entire water column will put you in the best position to catch more fish. If you don’t catch anything, you can feel confident about moving on to the next spot.

2. PRESENTATION

First, you need to ask yourself: Are you using the RIGHT presentation when you’re fishing in Myrtle Beach? What are the fish eating? Match the hatch! Once you have identified the food source of fish, it is now about how you present your lure to them.

My goal is usually to retrieve my lures as quickly as possible with the current. This makes it look natural and allows you to catch more fish. If this fails, you can always try dead drift. Sometimes, lures that are very passive and drift in the current can get the most attention.
